Solar term 19 of 24 · Water · winter
Winter Solstice 冬至
The longest night. From tomorrow, the light returns.
Dōngzhì · begins 22 December 2026 · approximately fifteen days
The turning point of the year, and the one most cultures mark. In the classical reading, one unit of yang is born tonight — the recovery starts before you can see it. This is the single most useful day of the year to start a habit, because everything after it is getting brighter.
The three micro-seasons
Every term divides into three pentads of about five days.
- Earthworms knot
- Elk shed antlers
- Springs begin to move
What to do in these fifteen days
- Start the thing tomorrow, not today. The solstice is the hinge; the day after is the push.
- Eat something warm and shared, if there is anyone to share it with.
- Write one sentence about what you want more light for.
On the table
Dumplings, or any food shaped like something whole · Black sesame soup
