Solar term 7 of 24 · Fire · summer
Summer Solstice 夏至
The longest day. After today, the light begins to give back.
Xiàzhì · begins 21 June 2026 · approximately fifteen days
Maximum light, maximum yang, and the exact turning point. Everything after this is technically a decline in daylight — which is why the traditional reading of midsummer is not triumph but the beginning of restraint. Sleep less at night, rest more at midday.
The three micro-seasons
Every term divides into three pentads of about five days.
- Deer shed antlers
- Cicadas begin
- Pinellia sprouts
What to do in these fifteen days
- Go outside at solar noon and stand in it for five minutes. That is the whole ritual.
- Start going to bed twenty minutes earlier from tonight. It compounds by autumn.
- Eat the coolest meal of the week today.
On the table
Cold noodles · Watermelon, mint, cucumber
